TMTA Scholarship Awards Endowment Fund

Planning for the Future

The Tennessee Music Teachers Association established the TMTA Scholarship Awards Endowment Fund over thirty years ago. We are one of a very few states to have such a fund.

We are very grateful to our members and corporate sponsors who joined together to make the "Thirty for Thirty" Tennessee Music Teachers Endowment Campaign a success.  We were able to raise $9,330 in 2016.  This means we will be able to award an additional $450 to students each year.  We would particularly like to thank The Steinway Gallery, Nashville and UBS Financial Services, Nashville for their generous contributions of $2,000 and $1,500 respectively.

However, we are now at a juncture where we need to think creatively and continue to increase the fund. We are asking members to seek additional corporate sponsors who might help us grow our fund.

The TMTA board had to make the decision to award fewer awards in 2017 and into the future unless our fund grows. We cannnot sustain the fund if we continue to withdraw an amount greater than the interest generated each year. We are returning to the original intent of the award and granting monies to students only for reimbursement of travel to the next level of competition.

One hundred and nineteen winners in the November competitions have gone on to win honors at the Southern Division competitions.  Of the 44 divisional winners from Tennessee who competed in the Music Teachers National Association competitions, 15 were national winners, 9 placed second and 5 placed third.

TMTA has placed these endowment funds with the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.  The professional management of the Community Foundation will enhance the growth of the fund and ensure the future continuation of the purposes for which contributions are given.  TMTA and the Community Foundation are fully tax-exempt, non-profit corporations chartered in the state of Tennessee and contributions to these funds are fully tax deductible.
